MoFFA gives unlicensed mortuaries, funeral homes one week to regularise operations

The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has given a one-week deadline to all unlicensed mortuaries and funeral homes in Ghana to regularise their operations or face closure, warning of strict enforcement under Act 829.

The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has issued a one week ultimatum to all mortuaries and funeral homes operating without valid licenses to regularise their operations or risk immediate closure.

In a press release dated October 22, 2025, the Agency reminded operators that it is mandated under Part Two of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829) to license, control, and regulate all establishments involved in the storage, transportation, and disposal of human remains.

MoFFA expressed deep concern that several mortuaries and funeral facilities continue to operate illegally, in direct violation of Section 55 of Act 829. The law stipulates that any person who operates such a facility without proper registration or licensing commits an offence and may face fines, suspension, or permanent closure.

“All operators of facilities and practitioners are by this notice advised to take steps to regularise their operations or risk closure of their facilities,” the statement cautioned.

The Agency urged affected operators to visit its offices at the former Ministry of Health Main Building, Room 22, or contact its officials through its official phone lines or website www.moffa.gov.gh for guidance on the regularisation process.

Reaffirming its mission, MoFFA pledged continued enforcement to ensure public health safety and dignity in death, under its guiding motto:

“Protecting the Living; Dignifying the Dead.”
