The 2024 running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has revealed that he is moving on with life outside politics for now, after his party suffered a heavy defeat in the December 7, 2024, general elections.
According to the unsuccessful vice-presidential hopeful, he plans to return to what he was doing before entering politics.
In an interview with a journalist at Parliament House, captured in a video shared on the social media platform Facebook, the trained medical doctor remained vague about his next steps.
“Life continues. I was somewhere before I came in, and I will be somewhere after I leave,” he told the journalist.
When asked whether he would return to the hospital to practice as a medical officer, NAPO, as he is popularly known, replied: “No.”
When the interviewer probed further and asked him why, the former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South responded, “That life is past.”
The journalist remarked, “When the incident happened during the SONA, people commended you for your swift move in salvaging the situation, so we thought maybe you were rehearsing going back to the hospital.” To this, NAPO replied: “That is a skill I have acquired, so I keep it.”
The interviewer also pointed out that Dr. Opoku Prempeh is often talked about on social media, suggesting it may be because people like him. However, NAPO retorted: “If everybody likes you, then that is a problem. That is what the Bible says.”
When asked if he follows people’s sentiments about him on social media, the former MP said that he is not very active online. “I leave them to enjoy the space. I cannot be everywhere,” he remarked.
