The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Efutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has emphasised that the minority caucus is not seeking to disrupt government business and that they’re fully committed to cooperating with the government.
Addressing the Appointments Committee on Friday, January 31, a day after chaotic scenes at the vetting, he made it clear that the minority’s objective is not to obstruct the government’s operations but to collaborate in forming the Cabinet and ensuring the swift approval of all appointments.
Afenyo-Markin highlighted that this is the first time since 1992 that nominees have been fast-tracked, leading to a process that has extended beyond the usual time frame.
He acknowledged the unique situation but stressed that governance must continue without unnecessary delays.
“Governance is a continuous process, and we should not frustrate it. We will do just that,” he affirmed. “As a leader, I take full responsibility for this,” he added, reiterating that the minority’s priority is to support the government’s efforts.
While reaffirming their readiness to cooperate, Afenyo-Markin called on his colleagues across the aisle to temper their hardline positions.
He reminded them that both sides share a mandate from the people, and must work together for the greater good of the nation.
“We must ensure that every decision we make is in the best interest of the country,” he said, urging transparency and shared responsibility in the committee’s work.
He further appealed to his colleagues to step down from their hardline stances, stating, “I humbly urge all hardliners to step down so that the chair and I can manage the affairs of this committee with full transparency.”
