The Ghana Police Service have arrested 12 suspects for looting in Tamale and causing damage to properties in Damango.
In a statement, the police said preliminary investigations have established that the suspects attacked and caused damage to some state properties, including setting ablaze the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Damango in the Savannah Region.
They have also caused damage to the residences of some District Chief Executives (DCEs) in parts of the country and vandalized some collation centers.
In the Tamale incident, chaos erupted after some youths vandalized the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly premises and looted food items from a warehouse.
Additionally, some of the suspects broke into the School Feeding Project Warehouse in Tamale in the Northern Region and made away with some items, including foodstuffs.”
“Footage of the attacks, vandalism, and looting has been obtained and is being reviewed by a team of dedicated investigators to identify other perpetrators and bring them to justice,” the statement read in part.
The incident reportedly occurred moments after the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat in the 2024 presidential election to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.
Meanwhile, the police have urged the public to remain calm as officers have been strategically deployed to key locations with intensified patrols to maintain law and order.
