All About the Z-9EH: Military helicopter in fatal crash involving Dr Omane Boamah, Dr Murtala, others

A tragic helicopter crash in Adanse Sikaman on August 6, 2025, has claimed the lives of several high-profile individuals, including the Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed
The aircraft involved in the crash has been identified as a Z-9EH military helicopter, a Chinese-made naval platform known for its versatility and rugged performance
The Z-9EH is a specialised variant of the Z-9
helicopter, itself a Chinese-licensed version of the French Eurocopter AS365
Dauphin. It is primarily used by the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and other security forces for anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship operations, and search-and-rescue (SAR) missions.
Typically operated by a two-person crew, the helicopter can transport large groups, up to 73 troops or 48 paratroopers, making it ideal for military personnel movement.
In medical emergencies, it can accommodate up to 27 stretchers with medical staff or 12 intensive care units, underscoring its value in evacuation and humanitarian operations.
Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprop engines, the Z-9EH can cruise at speeds of up to 482 km/h (300 mph). It has a ferry range of 5,000 km and can operate at altitudes of over 30,000 feet, with in-flight refueling capabilities that enable extended missions.
While the exact cause of the crash remains unknown at the time of filing this report, Ghanaian authorities and the Ghana Armed Forces have confirmed that the helicopter went off radar at around 9:00 a.m. on August 6, 2025.
The aircraft was reportedly transporting the officials to a scheduled programme in Obuasi when the incident occurred.
The crash has sent shockwaves across the country and raised urgent questions about military aviation safety and aircraft maintenance standards in Ghana.
