A 14-year-old Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate, Gariba Awudu, has died after falling ill during the ongoing exams at Assin Adiembra in the Central Region.
Awudu, a pupil of Nnuanua Number 1 Basic School, reportedly showed signs of illness during Thursday’s paper. According to information gathered by Radio Fosu/Adom News, he was taken to the Assin Adiembra CHPS compound for medical care after completing the exam.
However, due to the ongoing nurses’ strike, no medical personnel were available to attend to him. He was subsequently rushed to the Assin Fosu Polyclinic, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Assin South District Education Director, Isaac Opoku, described the incident as shocking and confirmed that arrangements are being made to officially inform Awudu’s parents.
Frederick Agyei, headteacher of Nnuanua Number 1 Basic School, said the school authorities acted swiftly to get the student medical help, but the outcome was tragic.
He expressed deep sorrow over the loss and called on the community and students to stay calm during this difficult period.
