ECG Commissions 33kV Feeder to Increase Capacity to Serve Obuasi and Beyond

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has commissioned its 33kV sub-transmission feeder to receive increased capacity from GRIDCo’s upgraded 50/66MVA transformer, which was energized on Saturday, August 24, 2025, to serve Obuasi and the surrounding areas. This milestone promises a stable, efficient, and reliable electricity supply for the enclave.
The commissioning brings to completion 49 days of intense teamwork and sacrifice. During this period, ECG deployed a dedicated standby team of engineers who traveled weekly between Kumasi and Obuasi to sustain operations and swiftly address any technical challenges while works progressed on both ECG and GRIDCo installations.
As ECG drops its 11kV cables and connects the new ones to GRIDCo’s cable gantry and to its 33kV GIS panels at the Obuasi Substation, customers in Obuasi and surrounding communities can now be assured of stable and reliable electricity for their homes, businesses, and industries for years to come.
To the hardworking and dedicated teams from Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ashanti South, the contractor, and GRIDCo who stood in the rain until the commissioning at 8:34PM.
