Election 2024: Kumasi witnesses NDC jubilation ahead of EC’s official declaration

Hundreds of supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) took to the streets of Kumasi on Sunday afternoon, celebrating their flagbearer John Dramani Mahama’s perceived victory, even before the official declaration by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Communities such as Atonsu, Esereso, and Oforikrom saw jubilant supporters believing their party was in a “comfortable lead,” prompting early celebrations.

Excitement was especially high in NDC strongholds like Asewase, Aboabo, and Asokore-Mampong, where supporters flooded the streets in full force.

Some rode on tricycles, while others zoomed through the streets on motorbikes or perched atop moving vehicles.

Music blasted from loudspeakers, with supporters dancing to party songs, including “Aseda” by King Paluta, popular among NPP circles.

Many wore party T-shirts and carried portraits of their candidate, causing significant traffic congestion across various parts of the city.

At Atonsu High School Junction, the celebrations took over the Atonsu-Lake road, leading to further gridlocks.

Some supporters even directed traffic, taking on tasks usually performed by the MTTD to prevent accidents.

While some road users expressed frustration, most were patient, carefully navigating the delays.

In their enthusiasm, some supporters climbed onto vehicle bonnets, risking their safety in their excitement over what they believed was a victory for their candidate.
