The Board of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has terminated 202 contracts worth $227.6 million, £1.17 million, and €4.08 million.

This was announced by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, July 16.

The Minister further announced that the remaining 145contracts  are under further review and may also be cancelled.

“The ECG Board has terminated 202 contracts worth $227.6 million, £1.17 million, and €4.08 million. The remaining 145 are under further review and may also be cancelled,” he said.

John Jinapor further said that the Mahama administration is not selling the Electricity Company of Ghana.

He says the government’s decisions only seek to introduce private sector participation in aspects of ECG’s operations, not to divest ownership.

“To ensure that we increase revenue and improve efficiency, the cabinet has approved private sector participation in ECG’s distribution network,” the Minister said.

He added “Let me put it on record again that we are not selling ECG. What we are seeking to do is involve the private sector, particularly in the billing and collection segment.”

John Jinapor further stated that Ghana is currently experiencing an uninterrupted power supply.

His comment was in reaction to fears expressed on social media that there was going to be a nationwide power cut that ue to a scheduled shutdown by ENI to increase gas production and carry out maintenance works on its plants.

He said,”We are experiencing uninterrupted power supply.”

The Minister also announced that the government has started installing 23,500 units of solar street lights.

“We are planning to move street lights away from the grid,” he said.

He added,“We have commenced the installation of 23,500 units of all-in-one solar street lights.”

Regarding the debt situation at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), John Jinapor accused the previous Akufo-Addo of leaving beyond almost $200 million TOR debt.

“Almost 200 million dollars in debt was incurred by the previous govt at the Tema Oil Refinery,” he said.
