Professor Kwame Gyan of the University of Ghana’s School of Law says he views the operation of Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) team as a direct channel through which corruption and related issues can be reported to President John Mahama, rather than relying on the usual whistleblowing methods.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, January 18, with Samson Lardy, during a discussion on the legality and operations of the committee, Prof Gyan said, “I see ORAL as just an extension of a point where you can go and report to the president.”
He added, “If they are just receiving information and passing it on, I don’t have a problem with ORAL.”
However, Prof Gyan expressed concerns about the team’s involvement with the press in gathering information.
“I also don’t expect that they should be walking around with cameras,” he said.
As part of his efforts to tackle corruption, President Mahama established the ORAL team to identify corruption cases and retrieve stolen state assets.
Nevertheless, the team has faced significant criticism regarding its legality and the methods of handling some cases.
