The Ashanti Region’s Konongo residents are calling for action against the continued mining operations that pose a threat to the area’s vital water source.
The residents’ wrath has been widely sparked by this problem.
The Owere River, Konongo’s primary water source, and the nearby settlements are being contaminated by the mining facility, which is located along the Kumasi-Accra route.
It gets worse when you utilize heavy equipment, like excavators, only a few meters away from residences, places of worship, and commercial establishments.
Speaking to Citi News from Accra, the head pastor of New Life Church of Light voiced profound concern.
He denounced the harm done to the community’s environment and social structure.
Environmental Protection Agency and Minerals Commission officials assert that they were not informed of any mining activity and were only informed of a dredging project by the Asante Akim Central Assembly.
Residents, frustrated by the continued damage that illicit mining is causing to farmlands and water sources, expressed their outrage.
Travelers on the roadway cannot see the entire scope of the devastation since the mining area has been closed off.
Despite years of requests, a portion of the highway close to the mining site is collapsing and has not been restored.
As a result, locals demanded that the mining cease right now in order to protect their essential water supply.
