The minority leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, addressing the press today, Monday, February 3rd expressed concerns about the safety of New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs.
He alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) majority has been engaging in bullying and intimidation tactics towards the minority.
“We’ve been cooperative, but they’re bullies,” he stated. “They intimidate us, and if we don’t stand strong, they’ll continue to bully us and we won’t allow that.”
Afenyo-Markin referenced the recent incident where the Appointments Committee had agreed to vet three nominees, only to have the NDC request additional nominees, leading to a total of five nominees being vetted that day.
He claimed that the NDC has also resorted to using “foot soldiers” to intimidate NPP MPs, including physical assault.
We’ve brought this to the attention of parliament police, and we’re taking steps to beef up our security,” Afenyo-Markin announced. “The attacks are becoming too frequent, and we don’t feel safe.”
Afenyo-Markin emphasised that NPP MPs are law-abiding and did not intend to disrupt or destroy public property during their protest on Thursday night. He urged critics to review the videos of the incident.
