One dead after angry NDC youth attacked Damongo Collation centre

A 35-year-old man, Mukila Ziblim, has died from gunshot wounds after being hit by a stray bullet when some National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth attacked a collation center and set fire to the storeroom of the West Gonja Municipal Electoral Commission on December 8th, 2024.

Myjoyonline, accompanied by the Savannah Regional Peace Council Chairman, Rev. Fr. Lazarus Annyereh, visited the hospital, only to find Ziblim’s lifeless body.

Hospital officials confirmed that the victim was brought in with a bullet wound to the left side of his chest and passed away within an hour. His body has been moved to the hospital’s morgue.

The incident occurred after NDC youth vandalized electoral materials at the Damongo Collation Centre, including laptops, pink sheets, ballot boxes, and other documents.

They also set the Commission’s storeroom on fire. In response, the police fired live bullets at the protesters, leading to the shooting of Ziblim and his subsequent death.

Rev. Fr. Lazarus Annyereh expressed disappointment with both the police and political leaders, particularly the NDC, for the loss of life. He noted that while the NDC leadership had urged negotiations with the police, the military’s withdrawal from their duties contributed to the escalation.

“I don’t want to blame only the police; I also blame the leadership of the NDC,” Annyereh said. He emphasized that the violent incident would tarnish Damongo’s reputation and negatively affect the region’s development.

“I’m devastated by his death. This election, meant to give us good leadership, has resulted in the murder of a citizen. This impedes our development,” he lamented.

Ziblim’s death marks the third casualty in this election cycle, following two other gun-related deaths in the Northern and Central Regions.
